How to Become A Substitute Teacher
The Human Services Office is responsible for providing a list of approved substitute teachers. This list of approved substitute teachers is used in contacting teachers for subbing.
In order to be on the list, the following information must be on file at the Human Services Office:
- Substitute Teacher Application
- Current valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or 150-day Substitute Teaching Permit
- College Transcripts
- Completed W-4 Forms (State and Federal)
- Public School Employee Beneficiary Nomination
- Employment Eligibility Form (I-9)
- Authorization, Release and Waiver
Hours for registering are Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the GHAPS Education Service Center Reception Desk – 1415 S. Beechtree Street.
All substitute teachers must register directly with Grand Haven Area Public Schools. Please come to our office at 1415 S. Beechtree Street. You will receive a packet of materials that will need to be completed. In addition, you will need to provide the following: A copy of your teaching certificate or verification that your certificate is being processed, and a copy of your transcripts will be required. In addition, one federal form requires identification including a driver’s license and either your social security card or birth certificate. A Passport may be used as an alternate piece of identification. This information must be presented at the time of registration. The registration also involves Fingerprinting and Pre-Employment Orientation Services.
At the time you register, you will receive information about AESOP (Automated Educational Substitute Operator) which is the program we use for our Substitute Teacher Placement. You will be issued an ID number and PIN to view any available substitute positions with Grand Haven Area Public Schools and receive phone calls from the system for assignments.
