Responsibilities and Duties


GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES  

As a substitute teacher with Grand Haven Area Public Schools, you will be able to view available positions on the AESOP Web Site or via telephone based on qualifications.  In addition, our teachers or principals may designate substitutes as preferred.You will carry out, to the best of your ability, the responsibilities of the positions you are teaching.  You will report to and be directly responsible to the principal or other administrator of the school or program to which you are assigned.   DUTIES OF THE SUBSTITUTE TEACHER REPORTING  

Upon arriving at the school building for a substitute assignment, please report to the Principal’s or Supervising Administrator’s Office.  Here you will be given:

  • Keys, if necessary
  • Schedule of duties:  Classroom assignments, playground, hall, bus or noon duty assignments
  • Explanation of any special activities of the day
  • Explanation of collection projects, if any; e.g.  food, clothing, and various monies
  • Explanation of fire and tornado drill procedures
  • Substitute Teacher Report Form and Time Sheet

  GENERAL DUTIES  

  • Check attendance and record names of those students absent.  Leave information for regular teacher
  • Follow the building procedures for reporting absences.  The building principal will let you know these procedures or the teacher will leave directions for this process
  • Do not excuse a child from class or from school without authorization from the office
  • Follow the plan for the days work as outlined by the regular teacher,  Deviations from the plan left by the teacher should be carefully noted.
  • A written summary of work accomplished should be prepared in duplicate.  One copy is to be left for the classroom teacher.  The second copy is for the principal
  • The schedule of duties (i.e. playground, hall, lunch, bus or club supervision) which the regular teacher would normally perform, are the duties of the substitute teacher
  • Accidents should be reported to the principal of the building
  • Fire and tornado drills may be called during the substitute teachers employment period.  The procedure outlined by the principal and spelled out on a sign by the classroom door should be followed.
  • Consult the office and teachers’ bulletin for further information as required.

MATERIALS LEFT FOR SUBSTITUTES   The following materials will be made available to you by the regular teacher:

  • Plan book, filled out showing the days work to be accomplished
  • Seating chart
  • Teaching manuals and desk copies of texts
  • Schedule – including regular studies and special classes
  • Special room rules
  • Emergency Response Guide
