Our Program
Through the years the Grand Haven Band Program has established a record of excellence that is recognized throughout the state. Grand Haven bands have consistently received First Division Ratings at District and State Festivals, as well as Marching Band District Festivals and competitions, and exemplify high standards of pride, conduct, and the pursuit of excellence.
Band Instruction and Opportunities
The Grand Haven Band Program provides instruction at eight grade levels, including intermediate school, middle school, and high school. Students can begin music instruction in 5th grade at White Pines Intermediate School by taking Beginning Band, where the focus is at the sectional level with emphasis on basic musical skills. Instruction continues in 6th grade with expanded instrumentation. Middle school band is offered in 7th and 8th grades at Lakeshore Middle School. In addition to the regular middle school band performances scheduled throughout the year, 7th and 8th grade band students also have the opportunity to perform in District Band Festivals and in the District VII Solo and Ensemble Festivals.
The Grand Haven High School band program provides five (5) different opportunities for instrumental music instruction at the senior high level. All students are enrolled in one of five performing ensembles based on ability level: Concert Band (Basic-Intermediate); Symphonic Band (Intermediate-Medium Advanced); Wind Ensemble (Medium Advanced - Advanced); Buccaneer Big Band (Basic-Intermediate-Advanced); and Marching Band (Intermediate-Advanced). Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band placement auditions occur in October. Jazz auditions are held in April.
